Fes is internationally renowned for its high quality leather goods, the majority of which originate at the Chouara Tannery, the biggest and oldest in the city, established over a thousand years ago. From a balcony vantage point you can see the different pits where the workers wash and remove the hair from the skins before polishing them with different colours produced from natural products. Later, after curing and sun-drying the hides are turned in to shoes, clothing, handbags, wallets etc. all on sale here at much reduced prices than the shops.
